I don't know if I'm right but "Murder in the red barn"
and "Don't Go Into That Barn" remind me of William
Faulkner's atmospheres, like in "Sanctuary" for
instance where Temple Drake gets raped with a corn cob
by an impotent and weird character in a barn.
I found this remark on the web : "Faulkner's Sanctuary
(1931) is a novel of irrationality and violence that
has been criticized for exploiting the violence
that ‘‘Barn Burning’’ seems to condemn."
I also think it has much to with the fears of
Choldhood Tom Waits is so keen on (I don't want to
grow up). Red barns are common in the states and they
are called "Faulkner Red barns" so may be there's a
link. As for the red colour, It is to me, akin to the
red you'd find in Hitchcock's "Marnie" or
Kubrick's "R.E.D.R.U.M."- "M.U.R.D.E.R." and therefore
closely related to The Edgar Allan Poe universe : SEX
related to DEATH
