... I only see her every few years .

I had four tickets to his Dublin show in 87 (ish?) .

Myself and my then housemate (who was a bit into Tom )
hitched up to Dublin and met his girlfriend (now his
wife and also the MArtha singing friend of mine) who
liked "Closing Time " We gave her one ticket. For the
spare ticket we brought her flatmate who had never
heard of him.

I looked across at her ( the flatmate)when Waits belted
out "HAng on St Christopher" into a megaphone ,stomping
his twisted body with one shoe hanging off ,in front
of a giant fridge. Her jaw was somewhere near the floor
and her eyes wide open. She hardly spoke to us after
the show and I never saw her again. Whenever we meet
up, after a bit too much wine, near the end of the
night when all is still, I usually ask my friend about
her old flatmate . She just laughs but won't tell me
any more about what she thought of the man.

And then I close my eyes as she sings Martha to
me..........
