Yes, Foreign Affair has Burma-Shave after all, an
absolute diamond of a song. And if Foreign Affair was
the only album TW ever released it would probably
still be one of your favourite albums, it's just that
he has such an amazingly high quality output. My
confession: Heartattack and Vine is my least favourite
album. But then it has Ruby's Arms, another gem. The
early albums I still love, though I too prefer his
later work. Please Call Me, Baby from The Heart of
Saturday Night is one of my favourite songs, such a
simple and beautiful sentiment, 'I don't want you
catching your death of cold out walking in the rain'.
Ah. So true when you're in love. Bone Machine,
probably if someone put a gun to my head and made me
choose, might (just might!) be my favourite, but I
love the Black Rider and Alice too. And then the
trilogy from the 1980s are almost in a world of their
own: it's quite impossible to be objective in any way
about songs you love so much. God, it's nice not to be
the only one so obsessed!
