That stands for Peer-to-Peer. As you probably heard,
few years ago, big file sharing network like Napster
and Audiogalaxy were shut down by industry coppers.
The reason was that these networks used a single
server to exchange information between all
participating computers. So it was quite an easy task
to kill the network -you just kill the server.

Bittorent, like E-mule, Morpheus and others, is
DECENTRALISED network. All the participating
computers are connecting as a web - one to another.
When you are downloading something, you are uploading
into somebody else at the same time. As a result,
central server can’t be killed, as there is no
central server.

It might be a bit simplified, but that is how I
understand it, anyway.

As for safety, that will vary from program to
program. For example, Kazaa has got nasty stuff in
it, so better not to use it. Bittorent (and easytree)
appears to be safe, but only programmer will be able
to give you 100% guarantee.
