Hi Eric,

Apart from being a Waits-fan, I'm a classical musician.
I know "Freitschütz" a bit, but had never seen
resemblances between both. Now you made me curious :-)
Anyway, it's the first Big Romantic German Opera.
Wagner was very much influenced by Weber.

The story (in short) is about hunter Max, with a false
friend Caspar, who sold his soul to the devil. Max has
to fire a trial shot, in order to marry his beloved
Agathe. The problem is that the latest time he's
always been missing. Caspar considers him to make
magic bullets, of which the 7th will belong to the
devil. In the end Max uses the 7th, after which AGathe
collapses. Luckily (there's of course a Happy End)
some hermit turns the direction of the bullet so that
it hits Caspar.
Max confesses guilt, and is finally allowed to marry
Agathe, and they live happily everafter;))

Hope this helps you...
Ciao,

Tristan
