Do I know Shane McGowan? I had a ticket to see him
Utrecht, Holland, some months ago, a friend of mine
from Gouda had treated me to the show. The show was
supposed to start 20.15 or something. We were there
in time, Shane wasn't. We waited and waited, the
audience sang Irish songs, the atmosphere was great,
my friend had to catch the last train, and I did not
find it fair to stay and see the show. At 22.20 we
were told his plane from London was belated, but he
sure was on his way. Knowing his reputation for booze
I had some doubts of course whether the story was
entirely the whole story. Anyway, 23.00 no Shane,
friend had to leave, I left with him, people at the
cashier were angrily trying to get their money back.
I left, but as my office is in the city that he was
playing, I went back around 24.00 hours just to check
whether he showed up. He had. I did not enter. The
next day I read that the show had been awful, he had
offended the audience, the bass player had made
kicking movements with his boots to the audience, and
according to the review in the newspaper the show was
a very bad one, musically speaking as well. STILL: I
have sympathy for the man, hope to see him live once,
and he has made some VERY beautiful songs, moving. If
and when he is in good shape, seeing and hearing him
will be very special I think. Well, NOT seeing him
was quite an experience to this way, especially as a
large part of the audience kept being in such a good
mood, singing, the Irish spirit I guess. I'm going
down, hang on to me, I'm going down, something like
that .-)) Well, the country is going up now, or so I
heard, because of all the IT companies pumping money
into their economy.

Bye now,
Harry
