A very interesting topic you raise there (here)
ginsoakedboy! Some time ago I read a story on the
Internet from somebody who claimed that his father
had beaten up Tom. I am not sure that I remember
exactly how the story went, but I think that this
story contained the following ingredients. Tom and a
friend of his had been involved in a sort of fight
and the father of the storyteller worked as a sherif
and after he had been insulted (?) he had hit Tom (I
actually should try and find back the article, I
think I copied it for later reference). The person
who published this story on the internet also wrote
something about a policeman who had died on the
street during an earlier fight or something like that
(I am vague here, I realize that ;-)). Tom was
staying in a hotel and was sitting in the window of
his hotel room with a friend, overlooking the street.
They were both drunk and were supposed to have sung
the song "I shot the sheriff", being in a cheerful
mood. I remember when I read the story I hoped it was
not true and that my image of my hero would not be
spoilt. I decided that this storyteller had probably
read something in a biography (maybe the book from J.
Jacobs that I have also read) and that he invented
something extra around what he had read. The whole
thing gave me thoughts similar to yours Ginsoakedboy.
I would not like my hero to have made fun of a
policeman (or any man or woman for that matter)
having been shot. Does knowledge about an artist
affect the way we appreciate the music. I think it
inevitably will, at least for me. It is an
interesting philosophical issue though. The way I
look upon it is as follows. An artist sends out
signals, the viewer or listener or reader receives
these signals. He or she does something with the
signals. The art is made by both the artist and the
receiver. Knowledge about a persons life, views,
behaviour will influence the way that the signals we
receive will affect us. Hmmm, I am in a philosophical
mood tonight I guess. ;-)

So far for now,
Harry the philosophical raindog
