1st ever time i heard tom waits was when i was a 15
year old punk: i used to hang out with people a lot
older than me - mostly students and 'drop outs'.
having been invited for a meal by one, i remember
entering the living room with the music
playing...thinking they must be some old guy crouched
down in the corner of the room, who'd they'd found
down an alleyway pissed as a fart, and took pity on.
unabashed, i can remember saying "who the fuck's
that?" to the host, who chuckled away - before
stepping back into the kitchen to resume cooking,
whilst i took the needle off the record - shaking my
head in bewilderment.
11 years later: i met a woman in amsterdam who worked
in a coffee shop. we hit it off straight away and
when i called in the next day, hoping i could pluck
up some courage, she had 'swordfishtrombones' playing
on the turntable. when i asked who it was and she
told me, i was like 'wow!' - this skunk must be good
shit!
