" It's strange how he's suddenly flavour of the month,
and I don't want to be the one who starts the backlash
but...Seems like Tom ought to get out and about a bit
more (perhaps a European tour of club venues".
"For some reason one always expects the latest album
to be the best...But eh I know I shouldn't say this
but eh I think it's a bit tame(d). It's more of the
same It's a great album, won't be listening
to anything else until autumn. But eh, keep thinking
of these words " finely tuned"".
" ...that these songs don't break any new ground, and
don't even seem to try to. I'm more than a little bit
frustrated by that, to be honest, and it makes me
wonder what the man's been up to for so long
(other than being a good daddy, which is fine)...He
continues to write about the same things over and over
again".
" But I think, after many listenings, that there is
more depth here than apparent and the album will be
worth listening to time and time and time and time
again... Christmas morning and all the presents is
never quite as good as the expectations of the child,
after the newness of the toys wears off".
" I'd like to see some groundbreaking as well, but
let's face it, almost every album since 1982 (?) has
been groundbreaking in one way or another, except the
best-of that came out recently. Who knows if he'll be
braking ground in the future?... It's got to be hard
to have set up the expectations he has and try to live
up to them".
" Although many of the songs share a striking family
resemblance to another song on another album, I do
believe that Tom spirals the staircase on Mule
Variations to reach new content --> mainly the
theme of HOME... and even though substantial
similarity exists to previous work, he's viewing life
from an elevated perspective".
" Agree Tom doesn't break any new ground on MV except
for the fact that it's the same ground that he already
broke.."
