holteender | 22.10.2004 15:41 | erm, waits i put the bloke in that line of beats and saintly sinners from the literature of jack black, burroughs, huncke, bukowski thru the comedy of bruce and hicks to the songwriting of newman, terry allen, willie nelson and shane macgowan (no coincidence waits married an irishwoman). very few of their ilk left, eh? hence, i think, the demand to see waits; there ain't much authenticity around these day. probably my last and only chance to see him live...tho' it looks unlikely from the set lists i have seen to date that i will get the melancholic drunker bar room balladeer stuff i like the best: martha, johnsburg illinois and his great masterpiece, traubert. despite the comical disorganisation (corruption?) of ticket distribution, at least some thought (and artistic integrity) appears to go into venue selection - compare to dylan, for example. i am glad i should finally get to see the man, and the 'dam is just the right place if you weren't in LA c.1973...i'll be toasting tom with belgian beer and northern lights w/e of 20th nov! |
