Schipol Airport, Gate 22,Monday 22nd Nov, just after
1PM...i cant believe it,for the second time on this
tour i'm in the right airport at the right time.What
luck! They are all there, the whole TW entourage
waiting in the departure lounge. This time, i'm going
to say more to The Man than just a "thankyou". I go up
to Tom with the piece of paper he signed for me last
week( "To Raymond,Good Luck...Tom Waits").He sees the
piece of paper( the one with 20 of his own songs
written on it and his signature),smiles and makes a
kind of finger-clicking gesture. He reaches out a
handshake, and says "hello Ray...what a surprise"( i
think he's making a little sarcastic joke because i
keep turning up).Well, there's so much i want to ask
him but i get the impression he's uncomfortable
dealing with questions from fans.You know what he
does? HE starts asking the questions( this way i think
it means he doesnt have to give too much information
about himself).He asks what i thought was the best
show so far(Sunday A'Dam in my opinion), and i tell
him it was great that he started the set with Rag(this
is the most popular song from the newest record i
think,judging from the crowd reaction).I also tell him
that we all appreciate it when he pulls out something
like What's He Building or 16 Shells.He nods but
doesnt say anything.He wants to know what i'll be
doing back in Scotland but i dont want to talk about
crap, so i ask him about future tours,recordings
etc.There's a North American tour being planned for
March and "maybe" some European dates after it.But he
wouldnt say anything about new material.All of this
was about 5 minutes and then he went off somewhere
else.I'm so pleased that he turned out to be such a
nice guy,and not like the grumpy fella he sometimes
portrays in interviews. The only problem i've got now
is that i've not washed my right hand in 48 hours!!
I'm risking a hygiene condition in the hope some of
the TW magic rubs off!.Love to the TW community.
