BurntFaceJake | 02.12.2004 13:02 | Do you remember the first time? Morning All, I'm eager to hear your experiences of the first time you heard Tom Waits. Particularly your initial reaction to the music. My own "baptism" was as follows.. In the Mid 80's I was at university in Liverpool & used to share a house with a number of other students including a well cool Irish guy. It was customary at the time, to blast out your music at top volume & you could hear lots of different music as you moved round the house. Mick, my irish friend, used to continually play Tom Waits, I think he only had Asylum Years but he played it a lot!! I can remember my first impression was not good, I recall telling him it sounded like he was beating a tramp to death in the kitchen. Shows what little I knew (and I hate to think about what my own choice of music was back in those days) within a few short months I had completely fallen in love with all things TW & was working my way through the back catalogue. 20 years later and the love affair is still going strong (I figure being a TW fan is like joining the mafia, once you are in, you are in for life) topped off this year with my first live experience in London last week. All thanks due to Mick for the introduction. Anyway that's my story, I'd love to hear yours... |
