Eric | 06.12.2004 17:06 | Night on earth (Paris) Saturday night, I went to a concert of Tom Waits covers and it was brill. It was a girl singing mainly ballads and doing it with great spirit, enthusiasm and humour (very important) Of course I wanted to approach her and as I was wondering how to do it she came up to me saying "- You're a Tom Waits fan ?" I nodded "- I thought so." Was it because I was mouthing the lyrics as she was singing or because of Small Change cap and my gin soaked eyes ? She wouldn't tell. Anyway, she's a music school teacher and she told me that she was studying The Black Rider with her kids (Harry, are you there ?) and told the whole piece was inspired by a Carl Maria von Weber Opera called "Freischutz" which I didn't know. Does any of you know it ? Is the resemblance striking ? I'll try to find it. She also told me she managed to get 50 kids singing "Chocolate Jesus" together. I was impressed. She was charming, and of course even more when she was singing. I was about to explain I had a cyber-fiancee and a cyber-lover, when she told me she was gay. Story of my life. Tonight I'm going to meet a canadian film maker Guy Maddin (Alex, are you there ?). I've known him through Tom Waits. I've seen 3 of his movies "Archangel", "Careful" and "Dracula" (a ballet on a Mahler simphony). The man's insane but a true poet and artist as well as a great tongue in cheek humorist. Should be fun.
