raymy | 30.03.2005 19:24 | odds'n'sods I'm so out of touch with what's been happening on the forum due to certain creative endeavours that have been testing my sanity( or what's left of it).I did notice there was a bit of chat about Waits top 20 in the Guardian a few weeks ago. If you're interested...there's a brilliant book called Songs In The Key Of Z by Irwin Chusid featuring several of the more obscure people Waits cited in his top 20. There's chapters on the likes of Harry Partch, Beefheart,Shooby Taylor and loads of oddball songwriters on the margins of music. The writing is superb, and Waits is namechecked in several chapters as being influenced by many of these artists.Worth reading if you can find it; there's a real collection of nutjobs in there. By the way, for those living in Glasgow( and i think there's a few on this forum)...the owner of McChuill's pub is a big Waits fan and played Heartattack & Vine in its entirety last week when i was in for an afternoon pick-me-up. Just ask him to play something by the Man and he'll oblige.Maybe we should compile a list of global pubs with Waitsian tendencies. |
