ginsoakedboy | 18.06.2005 22:39 | Anthony and the Johnsons Hello all, to those who need hugs and those who are hugged up. Thanks to this place I was talking about Anthony and the Johnsons to my brother, ginsoakedpete who was on hos way to Bratislava with some Frnch ladies and his Shetland girlfriend. Now I had told them that I had heard about A&TJ here, but hqad not been able to hear anything by them. Shetland Llass said she knew and liked them. Anyway , thought no more about them until I got a Cd in the post. (Two, one was Arcade Fire which I don't reallly like yet) . So I played A&TJ and I have heard them three times now. I don't know if I love it or not. I don't know if it is a grating , sentimental dirge of an album or the best thing I have heard for ages. So I gave a copy to ginsoakedmom , and she says this is either brilliant or some kind of depressing funeral music( mind you , she likes Johnny Mathis too). My wife, ginsoakedmissus, likes it a lot. So to make a short story long I was up last night watching Jools Holland's show ( for anybody who does not know him, he is kind of the John Peel of TV late night music - is that fair ?) and A&TJ were on it. I was expecting a small , skinny black guy, possibly with glasses. In my head he had a shaven head - probably because he was going bald at the age of 32- and stood a little far away from the mike. He was a singer, didn't play . What I saw was a white plump (fattish) person ,with long black hair , bit of lipstick , playing the piano. Sometimes looked like a man who looked like a woman, sometimes looked like a woman who looked like a man. And it was one of the most distinctive performances I have seen. Really gripped by it, I was. So to bring me somewhat roundaboutedly to a TW link I must ask Have ye ever had a mental picture of an unseen singer that was so far out from reality? Ever pictured the face to the unseen owner of the voice accurately? How did you picture TW before you saw him. To me, on the cover of Swordfishtrombones, he was the big bloke with teh white makeup on the cover, not Tom. And even today, when I see the old clips of early stuff, that powerful , deep, gruff, forceful voice does not seem to fit that light skinny frame. Anyway, I'm glad I got that off my chest. And last night |
