raymy | 26.08.2005 20:22 | did someone mention Daniel Johnston? i've just woken up,Rip van Winkle style, after 6 weeks in a parallel universe, out of touch with you good people on the forum. Anyway, saw something on here about Daniel Johnston + a TW connection from a past post...there's a book called Songs In The Key Of Z(the Curious World Of Outsider Music)by Irwin Chusid. Not only is it one of the best music books ever written,it contains chapters on many artists whom Waits particularly rates, including the aforementioned Johnston,Shooby Taylor("the human horn" - TW is a massive fan of this guy), Harry Partch and the sublime Captain Beefheart.Johnston, like several others featured in the book,is deranged and deluded and makes music to match.I've got the 2 accompanying cds from the book and can vouch for its mental-ness.You gotta read it,it's brilliantly written. For those who live around Glasgow,Borders Books were doing copies for about 15 quid.Plenty of TW namechecks throughout, too.Well, see you all on the next Waits tour (we're allowed to dream arent we?) |
