miss_emelmahaaeey | 13.09.2005 15:09 | Daniel Johnston/Z Songs/Raymy Raymy, I got the Songs in the Key of Z book and CD and just want to say thanks. There are a few real gems on the CDs, not least Daniel Johnston. I've since bought another album with some songs of his and covers by famous artists, including the King Kong cover by Tom Waits, which is absolutely fantastic. This is a benefit CD, done by Waits et al to raise money for Johnston, so if anyone else on the forum is interested, you can buy it from Amazon (see the reviews and samples) at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002MH3KQ/ qid=1126605180/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/202-7828479- 7857454 The covers are good (King Kong the best, naturally!), but the originals are even better, I was really blown away, so thanks for the recommendation Raymy. (Also read the article in The List, very interesting, was a pity the showings of the film at the Edinburgh Cameo were last month, I would've loved to have gone, though apparently Johnston is ill again unfortunately and had to pull out of the Question/Answer sessions). On the Songs in the Key of Z CD I also loved The Shaggs and have been just dipping into the book and reading bits and bobs when I have time - it's very readable and interesting, but I think I prefer hearing the stuff on CD so far. Was a little disappointed not to hear any Harry Partch on the CDs, but there's a lot of other interesting stuff, much of it just funny curiosity value, but some of it really good. So cheers. |
