We got piano! Three in the one& only encore
(Invitation to the blues, Johnsburg and House where
nobody lives).
I put the blame for only getting one encore firmly on
the shoulders of the row 1 spectators. From my prime
rang 4 zijbalkong seat I had limited view of the
stage, but there was a splendid overview of the floor
rows. Row one immobile, no feet –a-tapping, heads
nodding or bodies swaying. On the other hand rows 3 &
4 all had that funky bass player neck thing going and
were getting right into it. Some grooving forward and
back, some going side to side. But how did those
deadbeat tomato eaters get allocated those row 1
seats. No wonder Mr Waits felt moved to bring out
stories of graveyard shifts and dead ringers.
We were spared most of that cognoscenti bullshit where
the first chords get clapped to indicate they
recognise the song. Early on Tom stopped up and
said ”Now that could have been any one of 10 different
songs”....
Missed a few of the Real Gone Songs (Dead and Lovely,
Baby Gonna leave me, Top of the Hill, How’s it going
to end). Nothing off Raindogs, but otherwise a few
other older ones. And a good mix of rockier numbers
and calmer ones. No sign of whatever the comment was
about him appearing reluctant. The songs weren't just
being sung, but ”performed” in the sense of being
acted out . I wouldn’t bother with the theatrics if I
was bored with it. So I reckon he had a good time, as
did we.... And hey one encore is fine – he still has
Saturday and Sunday to go.
I can’t give y’all a full set list, only got 17
written down after the show from memory. It ran for a
bit over 2 hrs, so know I am missing a few. Like the
other shows a lot from Real Gone, and a mixture of
repeats and different ones. Anyway I was only back to
the hotel room to collect paintbrush and can of red
paint. Spotcha!.
It was a great show!!.
