Yes, it's a tramp. Somebody wanted to make a
documentary on tramps I think, and Gavin Bryars heard
the melody of the old man singing. It was a song
which was recorded by chance, while making this
documentary. He looped the melody. He played the
music in a sort of art institute or something like
that, people were working in a room, Bryars played
the tape, just as background music, at one point he
left the room, came back and noticed that the people
working in the room were very much touched by the old
man singing. The music appeared to be very powerful
indeed. So, Mr Bryars made several recordings around
this voice, recordings with and without orchestra.
Tom Waits at one point heard the tape and found it
beautiful music as well. Upon which Bryars asked him
to make a recording with him as well, joining Waits'
voice to the old man's voice. The tramp died a couple
of years ago, I am not sure if he ever heard the
result. There is a cd with only this song, in about
six versions, on or two versions with Tom. Quite nice.
