I'm eager to hear your experiences of the first time
you heard Tom Waits. Particularly your initial
reaction to the music.
My own "baptism" was as follows..
In the Mid 80's I was at university in Liverpool &
used to share a house with a number of other students
including a well cool Irish guy. It was customary at
the time, to blast out your music at top volume & you
could hear lots of different music as you moved round
the house.
Mick, my irish friend, used to continually play Tom
Waits, I think he only had Asylum Years but he played
it a lot!!
I can remember my first impression was not good, I
recall telling him it sounded like he was beating a
tramp to death in the kitchen.
Shows what little I knew (and I hate to think about
what my own choice of music was back in those days)
within a few short months I had completely fallen in
love with all things TW & was working my way through
the back catalogue.
20 years later and the love affair is still going
strong (I figure being a TW fan is like joining the
mafia, once you are in, you are in for life) topped
off this year with my first live experience in London
last week.
